An Unexpected Luncheon Guest

Have you ever had an unexpected guest drop by right at meal time when you have nothing prepared to serve? That happened to me today, but thankfully everything worked out just fine. My advice in this situation – don’t be fussy. Make do with whatever you have on hand. After all, the visitor chose YOU above all others to spend some one-on-one time with, so make the most of it. Count your blessings, be glad you have friends who are comfortable enough to stop by without calling first. Serve up whatever you have with a smile because your guest came by to see you, and the food is only a secondary part of the visit. Here’s how I handled the dilemma of having nothing prepared as luncheon fare today when my guest arrived.

I had never met the guy who showed up, yet he seemed like a familiar old friend. I had often read about him to my children and to the children at school.

The Velveteen Rabbit has always been one of my favorite books, but I never dreamed that one day I would have the opportunity to entertain the main character for lunch. So what to do?

I decided on a picnic lunch, and I first offered him a nice salad of mixed greens. It was quite to his liking.

He had more than one helping. I was honored.

I then offered my most tender young day lily sprouts.

They were a hit with my little friend. Alas, I had no cakes or pies baked for dessert. I should have not despaired, for his nose was drawn to the fragrance of the purple mandevilla.

He topped off lunch with a light dessert of mandevilla blossoms.

I must say, today’s guest was quite unexpected, but he was the most delightful visitor I’ve had in a while.
