I have always been under the impression that making butter is a difficult process. I was so wrong. My grandson Charlie learned to make butter at school last week. He knew I would be visiting at his house this week, so he couldn’t wait to show me how we could make our own butter too.

Butter
Heavy whipping cream, room temperature
Salt, optional
Fill a jar about halfway full of cream (I used 1 cup), then add a marble. Cover tightly with a lid. Shake the jar for about 10 minutes, or until the butter separates from the liquid. Remove the butter from the jar and squeeze the excess liquid out of the butter; rinse with cold water. Add salt to taste, if desired, and knead into the butter. Cover and refrigerate.
To make butter with kids, the only equipment needed is a jar with a lid and a marble.
Of course, there’s more than one way to make butter at home, but the way Charlie learned to make butter is such a fun way to make butter at home with kids. If you wanted to make a larger quantity, you would probably want to use a mixer or food processor to help you with the job, but making butter at home is actually easy to do and pretty yummy too!
I think Paula Deen would be proud.

I was raised on a 'gentleman's farm' we had a milk cow. My brothers milked the cow and sold the milk. We had plenty of rich cream. When we had several cups of cream we would 'churn' it into butter. We had a big glass butter churn and we all had to take our turn churning the butter. It seemed like we churned for hours–then all of a sudden there was a big lump of butter–we hit gold.
Thanks for the fun memory!
