While I love to stay home and write, I also enjoy getting out to share what I’ve written with groups. These events are the main way for me to show and tell my books, so I like to attend as many as possible. Due to my immune system issues, I fell into the high-risk health group, so staying at home has been necessary during the Covid-19 pandemic. Before the virus, I took the ability to get out in public for granted.
Woodrow Wilson Elementary invited me to speak to the students on behalf of Read Across America Day. The students impressed me with their courtesy and attentiveness. Woodrow Wilson students and staff know how to make an ordinary person feel like a V.I.P. This was my first event out with my books since the pandemic began.
A second March event was an invitation to the author fair at the Poplar Bluff, Missouri, library. This is an annual event, but it has been suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was good to attend and to feel safe enough to be in public again.
Another event was literacy night at Central Heights Elementary School in Nacogdoches, Texas. The school hosted a book fair, along with fun activities for families. I was fortunate to be invited as a guest author to visit with the students and their parents to promote reading. These two third grade students and avid readers helped me set up my table that evening. Thanks, Jolie and Avery!
After such a long, boring absence from in-person events, I no longer take these activities for granted. I look forward to many more opportunities to meet readers and share my children’s picture books and chapter books.
